In 1966, at the early ages of 23 and 20, Carlos LeGerrette and wife, Linda, began as volunteer organizers in support of Cesar Chavez and the striking grape workers in Delano, California. This was the beginning of the Delano Grape Strike organized by the United Farm Workers.
Cesar Chavez asked the newly wedded LeGerrette’s if they would volunteer the summer to direct the grape boycott in San Diego. Their commitment was over the top great, but the LeGerrette’s math was bad as the summer stretched out to 12 years. As assistants to Chavez, they were blessed to be in positions where they learned first hand the hard work and sacrifice necessary to build a successful labor movement.
