2000

SOAR (Success, Opportunity, Academics, Relationships), EOP’s mentoring

program, was developed by Wanda Clay Major in 2000 to assist new freshmen and transfer students’ transition to the University. The program started with 10 students in the first cohort. The program currently serves approximately 100 students including all new incoming Guardian Scholars and continues to develop the leadership skills of 25 peer mentors.

2003

After 30 years as the director of EOP, Gus Chavez retires, having served as a champion in the cause to improve access to higher education for over22,000 students from underserved populations at SDSU.

2004

ESAB, the EOP Student Advisory Board, with Charlotte

Moore and Millie Robinson as the first advisors,

becomes a recognized SDSU student organization.

2007

The SDSU Guardian Scholars (GS) program is started by Dr. James Kitchen, Vice President of Student Affairs, along with the EOP Director Reggie Blaylock, with Josephine Mojica as first director of the program. The program supports former foster youth, wards of the court, unaccompanied homeless youth, and students under legal guardianship throughout their educational journey at SDSU.

2014

2017

Majoring in food and nutrition at SDSU, EOP student Alejandro Arias receives the Trustee Emeritus Ali C. Razi Award for Outstanding Achievement. He mentors students through the SOAR (Success, Opportunity, Academics, Relationship) program and is a member of the Transfer Student Outreach Alliance, which helps community college students navigate the transfer process to a four-year higher education institution.

2018

EOP officially opened the Undocumented Resources Area (URA),

providing a safe and welcoming space for undocumented students, staff and faculty at SDSU. The URA, led by Cynthia Torres, collaborates with campus partners to provide students with academic support, career advising, and referrals to off-campus community service providers to help improve student retention and progress towards graduation.

2018

EOP student Manuel Gonzales IV, a psychology major with a minor in publichealth, also receives the CSU’s Trustee Emeritus Ali C. Razi Award, marking the second consecutive year (and the third time in five years) a SDSU student has been selected for the award, which carries a $12,000 scholarship. Gonzales, and other recipients, were recognized for their academic performance, research, community service and ability to overcome personal challenges.

2019

EOP student and former SOAR protégé Maryana Khames, an international security and conflict resolutions sophomore, was appointed as one of two Cal State University student members of the CSU Board of Trustees by California Governor Gavin Newsom at the age of 18. Her appointment made her one of the youngest CSU Board of Trustee members and the first SDSU student to be nominated to the board. In the role, Khames

will represent more than 480,000 students from all the schools within the CSU system.

2019

In partnership with SDSU, Jewish Family Service is providing

immigration legal services at no cost to students, faculty and staff. The Undocumented Resource Area, in coordination with EOP and the Division of Student Affairs is coordinating delivery of the services, which include education and outreach services on campus.
